September 2007 Fingertip Formulary Insights™
Key Findings
- Big Three: Vytorin, Lipitor and Crestor are the leaders in tier 1 and 2 availability for commercial plans. Vytorin has 69% tier 1/2 availability (as a percentage of covered lives), while Lipitor has 62% tier 1/tier 2 availability.
- Who gained ground: Crestor made a significant move in the 2nd half of 2006 and early 2007, with its availability on tiers 1 and 2 increasing from 36% from July 2006 to over 50% in 2007.
- Who lost ground: As a result of the availability of generic simvastatin in June 2006, Zocor’s tier 1/2 availability declined from 69% in July 2006 to under 10% by January 2007. In the commercial market, Zocor’s tier 1/2 availability declined more rapidly, compared to the Medicare market. Lipitor lost approximately 10% in absolute terms during the year.
